Cuba Part 4

Welcome to the final blog post about my trip to Cuba. It has taken me almost two whole months to post all of the pictures I wanted to but I managed it. If you want to check out Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3 just click the links. This part of my trip to Cuba will focus on a trip I took to Varadero which is the town closest to the resort and will include some pictures I took around the resort as well.  I am also trying something new by putting captions under each photo instead of explaining everything up here.

The first picture in this post is of a classic old Cuban car and a church I saw in Varadero. I thought this was a very Cuban picture with the church and the car together in one picture.

The two photos are of lizards I saw while talking around the town. I am not sure what the first species of lizard is in the first photo. The second lizard is called Allison's Anole.

The photo of the old black car I took as I liked the look and the quality of the car.

Moving away from cars for a photo, the following photo is of the gated entrance to someone's home. I just liked the ironwork and the little roof over the gate.

Heading back to cars one last time, this photo is of the taxi that took us back to the resort from the town. Each ride costs 20 Cuban Pasos so overall a trip from and back to the resort would cost 40 Cuban Pasos.

The Palm Warbler is shown here sitting under one of the bushes at the resort. I saw a couple different kinds of birds around the resort but I only managed to grab this photo.

This cactus tree is a national monument on Cuba due to being what they claim the largest cactus tree on the island. It will cost you two Cuban Pasos to get in and see it however I thought it was worth it as it is unlike anything around Canada. There was also a lot of wildlife surrounding the tree such as lizards, birds, and butterflies.

This is my favourite photo I took while in Cuba I think as I have added it to my portfolio. In this picture, you can see a Cuban Green Anole climbing on the giant cactus tree that was in the previous photo. I like this photo as the Anole isn't straight it is on an angle and the tree bark itself is slanted which adds to the photo in my opinion. You are also able to see the spikes on the tree.

At the giant cactus tree, I was also able to grab this photo of a White Peacock butterfly drinking from a flower. This butterfly flew around this flower for a while then landed and started to slowly turn towards me as I sat there snapping photos of it. I like this side view more than the head on one as you are able to see more detail on its wings.

What better way to end a blog series on Cuba than with a beach picture. Shown here is the beach at the resort with the white sand and light blue water. Unforcutally there are some clouds as it was late afternoon. Overall I highly recommend this resort and overall the country of Cuba as the people are very nice and it is extremely safe.

Godda and Booth Lake Trip Report: Algonquin Provincial Park Solo Trip

My longest back country camping trip this year was into Algonquin Provincial Park. I went from September 16-19, 4 days and 3 nights. Originally my plan was to stay until the 20th but circumstances forced me to change my original route. Originally, I had planned on going from the Shall Lake Access Point(17) to Godda Lake for one night, then head down to Boot Lake for two nights, up to Booth Lake for one night, then home. However, during my first day, I realized that I had overestimated my capability to portage with a 75 pound canoe, and I had planned too long of a route. I altered my plans and instead spent two nights on Godda Lake and one night on Booth Lake.  Day 1: I got to the access point at 11:10am and had everything unpacked and loaded into the canoe by 11:25am. I made my way through Farm Lake (which has super clear water) to the first portage into Kitty Lake. The portage was only 100M and was the first of the trip. It took 10 minutes to double carry. I was able to do t...

The Canadian, Vancouver-Toronto

The final part of my trip was taking ViaRail's Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto. This has been a bucket list trip for me as I've wanted to do this since I can remember, and it did not disappoint. The food on the train is quite good, with some meals being shown in this blog post. Lunch and dinner come with a soup or salad to start the choice of 4 mains and then dessert. The photo's are a mix from my Sony a6600 and Iphone, the Sony camera did not take good photos through the train windows so I had to resort to the Iphone which still wasn't the best, hence the reflections in some of the photos. A Day Trip to Algonquin

I recently had the chance to go to Algonquin Provincial Park for a day trip during the week. This meant slightly less crowds at the trail heads. I did two different trails, while at the park, Whiskey Rapids and Peck Lake. Each trail is roughly 2.5ish KM in length and moderate difficulty.  The Whiskey Rapids trail, starts off going downhill really fast, then follows the river for a good distance leading to the rapids the trail is named after, before heading back up to the trailhead in a much more reasonable ascent. On this trail I was able to take a photo of the White-throated Sparrow and the first two mushroom photos. The second trail, Peck Lake is a loop trail that goes around Peck Lake which is rather small and more of a good size pond compared to a lake. This trail had a little up and down but was fairly flat overall. The trail has multiple spots that you can use to go right down to the water and have a look around. The remaining photos are all from that trail.   ...
